I had this guy drop off some squid jigs last year, and was wondering if it is the right time of year to give it a try.

Any details would be appreciated.

I haven't done it for a couple of years but mid November through mid January is the best time, right now should be right around the peak. I'm not sure where you're from, but the Des Moines and Redondo piers are typically the best.

Now's the time to go. We have a couple squid reports over at WashingtonLakes.com (new saying - "it's not just lakes anymore"). Check out the saltwater section, Area 10. Go after dark, bring a lantern with rope to hang it over the side of the dock and fill up yer bucket!

Do you need a Washington license to take squid?

You need to have a shellfish/seaweed license. The regs state the license must be worn visibly on the outside of clothing while harvesting shellfish.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Niv,

You can also check out the pier at Steilacoom, it's closer to you than Redondo or Des Moines. They have lights on the pier, but you'll catch more if you have your own lantern.

Let me tell you, there is NOTHING like the heart-pounding adrenaline rush you get from battling a Puget Sound squid.

I can also tell you that the squid bite has been OFF at the Edmonds pier. I think it is a general rule that incoming tide is best.

Hey,

I was sore after the clam opener in November. Them clams can wrestle up a storm.

Actually, them Squids do "bite" and you can feel'm fighting. Just watch out for the black squirts as they come up to the pier. laugh Also watch it when you handle them, as they do have a beak, will bite, and can let you know they're pi$$ed about being out of the water! wink
